Anonymous asked: hi! i really admire the work on your tumblr. i'm a collage artist and poet trying to expand my art practice into gifs. where would you suggest that i begin? any websites or software you'd recommend? thank you so much!
A lot of people solely use photoshop to create gifs. Before I knew this, I started making gifs in 2007 using “macromedia flash” , which I found to have an intuitive animation interface. Flash .gif exports don’t look the best because of the way it chooses it’s 256 colors and anti-alias techniques (photoshop does a much better job) but working in Flash helped me produce lots of content quickly and experiment with various techniques. Flash has been released by Adobe since then. I still use Flash for vectored onion-skinning, but I have upgraded to a wider array of tools (Maya, C4D, Final Cut, After Effects) . Basically you should think of gifs as silent films and use anything that you would for longer video production, but think, work, and export on a smaller scale. Tumblr likes 500x500, and less than 1MB and 40frames. (A website like imgur will display much larger/longer gifs. ) I use Photoshop to compile everything under these restrictions. Hope this helps.
